The National Fish Habitat Partnership (NFHP) is a science based, non-regulatory, partnership driven effort to conserve fish habitat across the United States.  NFHP was developed in the early to mid-2000s in response to the noted declines to fish populations and their associated habitats across the United States with the effort led by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and supported by a wide range of federal and state fisheries agencies along with many conservation organizations.  The focus of this effort has been on protecting intact, rehabilitating degraded, and improving engineered fish habitats across the United States by targeting the root causes underlying fish habitat issues. Since 2006, twenty Fish Habitat Partnerships have been organized around specific habitats, fish species or geographic areas.  By 2026, these partnerships will have implemented 1,731 projects resulting in 11,827 habitat enhancements or parcels of habitat protected including 18,525 riverine or coastline km and 50,397 hectares of marine, lake, impoundment, and reservoir fish habitat along with 3,364 science and data products using $67,834,352 U.S. dollars of direct federal NFHP investment matched or leveraged by $353,144,113 U.S. dollars.  In addition to mobilizing funding for fish habitat, NFHP has been building a community of support and practice by engaging over 191,591 individuals since 2021 representing over 1,000 organizations and entities. NFHP was codified by the U.S. Congress in 2020 and reauthorized in 2024, building on the strong initial foundation and ensuring success into the future.
