Recent quantitative studies conducted in Victoria and New South Wales have revealed encouraging trends in the populations of several freshwater fish species since the end of the millennium drought. This research, based on long-term monitoring data from various river systems and water bodies, indicates a consistent upward trend in many species including the Murray Cod (Maccullochella peelii), Trout Cod (Maccullochella macquariensis), and Macquarie Perch (Macquaria australasica). While unpacking the drivers of these trends at state or basin scale is difficult, waterway and process specific studies are providing evidence that successful conservation efforts, including habitat restoration, improved water management practices, restocking and the implementation of sustainable fishing regulations are all contributing. These positive trends provide a hopeful outlook for the continued recovery and sustainability of freshwater fish populations in these regions, providing important evidence that investment into restoration actions for native fish species provides a useful environmental return on investment.  The presentation will delve into the methodologies employed, the trends observed, and the implications for future conservation practices in southeastern Australia's freshwater ecosystems.
