There has been recent evidence which shows that global shark fisheries can be sustainable where there is science-based management in place. Part of this science-based management is a good understanding of the life history of species targeted by fisheries. Arguably the most important life history information is an understanding of the age and growth of individuals in a fished population. Estimating the age-and-growth of sharks that are captured by commercial fishing is important for deriving key demographic parameters (mortality, age-at-maturity, longevity, recruitment) required for stock assessment and fisheries management. Carcharhinus sorrah is medium sized tropical shark, commercially targeted in Australian fisheries. This study sampled 102 C. sorrah from observer trips in net and line fisheries in the Northern Territory. Age-at-maturity, length-at-maturity and growth rate was established for this region. This is the first time the length-at-maturity and the age-at-maturity have been investigated for Carcharhinus sorrah in the Northern Territory. This information is important for continuing to improve the stock assessment for these species in commercial fisheries in the Northern Territory.
